London (AFP) - The UK government will welcome foreign political leaders, tech industry figures, academics and others this week for a two-day summit billed as the first of its kind on artificial intelligence (AI). The gathering, set to be attended by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US Vice President Kamala Harris, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, will focus on growing fears about the implications of so-called frontier AI.  The most advanced generation of AI models, they have prompted concerns around everything from job losses and cyber attacks to humans losin......

Brussels (AFP) - NATO leaders meet in Lithuania on Tuesday for a summit set to be dominated by the alliance's response to Russia's war on Ukraine and Kyiv's push for membership.  Here are some key things to look out for at the two-day meeting of the Western military bloc: Ukraine's membershipUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to come to Vilnius to make the case to NATO's 31 leaders that Kyiv deserves to join the alliance once Russia's war ends.  Kyiv and NATO members in eastern Europe have pushed for a clear roadmap as they believe only bringing Ukraine under the alliance's collecti......

Hiroshima (Japan) (AFP) - President Volodymyr Zelensky secured more arms, munitions and "unwavering" diplomatic support from G7 allies in Hiroshima Sunday, as Russia claimed victory in the battle for a devastated eastern city. Meeting leaders from a bloc of rich democracies, Zelensky won a commitment from US President Joe Biden to provide yet more "ammunition, artillery, armoured vehicles" on top of access to F-16 jets. Top Zelensky aide Andriy Yermak said the US package included additional ammunition for HIMAR rocket launchers, artillery shells, anti-tank guided missiles and thermal imaging s......

Nusa Dua (Indonesia) (AFP) - Russia faced mounting diplomatic pressure to end its war in Ukraine Tuesday, as G20 leaders meeting in Indonesia rued the high cost of the eight-month-old conflict. In a draft communique, countries including Russia deplored the impact of "the war in Ukraine" -- a conflict that "most members strongly condemned". The group is also expected to declare that "the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons" is "inadmissible", a veiled rebuke of President Vladimir Putin who has repeatedly raised the spectre of nuclear conflagration. Putin was forced to skip the summit as he ......

Nusa Dua (Indonesia) (AFP) - Sitting in the dark, wearing a traditional Indonesian batik shirt and surrounded by candles, Elon Musk offered a vision for the future that includes aliens, deep tunnels and rocket tourism. The seemingly disembodied billionaire Twitter owner appeared by video link on Monday to address business leaders in Bali on the sidelines of the G20 summit, only his face and hands visible on an otherwise black screen. "We had a power outage three minutes before this call. That's why I'm entirely in the dark," he told Indonesian tycoon-cum-moderator Anindya Bakrie. Musk was aske......

Los Angeles (AFP) - President Joe Biden made a forceful pitch to reassert US influence in Latin America through a weeklong summit in Los Angeles but the modesty of his promises will test his efforts at a time when China is making rapid inroads.  Some two dozen leaders came together for the Summit of the Americas where Biden and the rest of the top US brass pledged to do more with them on migration, clean energy and health infrastructure -- and charmed guests with glitzy receptions befitting Tinseltown.  Biden said that the Americas should be the "most forward-looking, most democratic, most pro......
