Trump's Iran war derailing his real revenge obsession: analysis

Trump's Iran war derailing his real revenge obsession: analysis

The war in Iran has worn down President Donald Trump's spirit and sidetracked his "culture war obsessions," an analyst explained on Monday.

Salon's Amanda Marcotte discussed how Trump has tried to convince the American public to support the ongoing war in the Middle East. Despite his attempts during his address to the nation last week, he "sounded like a whipped dog, barely able to summon the energy to make false promises about ending the war 'very shortly.'"

Trump has also attempted to redirect attention from Iran back to his "culture war fixations." ...

Trump's grip on reality said to be 'slipping fast' as economy 'wrecks': 'It's happening'

President Donald Trump's presidency has hit a breaking point, an analyst said on Monday.

The New Republic's editor Michael Tomasky described how Trump's plummeting economy and rising prices of oil amid the Iran war have revealed how out of touch the president has been with Americans and their growing concerns.

"The presidency of Donald Trump is now officially in collapse," Tomasky wrote. "His war is … not exactly a disaster, but it sure isn’t the cakewalk he envisioned when he sprang it on the American people and the world with no notice on February 28. His firing of Attorney General Pam Bondi because she wasn’t sycophantic enough indicates a man who is utterly incapable of understanding anything about how democracy is supposed to work. His economy is a wreck and may well get worse. His proposed budget, especially the half-trillion-dollar increase to the Pentagon, is wildly out of whack with the priorities of the public."...

'His presidency is over': Trump gets warning he's gone past the point of no return

A professor and political analyst signaled on Monday that President Donald Trump's slipping political support will not rebound — and that it's over for him.

In an opinion piece for The Hill, John Kenneth White, professor emeritus at The Catholic University of America and author of "Grand Old Unraveling: The Republican Party, Donald Trump, and the Rise of Authoritarianism,” described just why Trump's reign has hit its limit. White outlined how Trump's promises to the American people have completely gone by the wayside as he "started a war of choice with Iran" while the economy plummets and inflation rises, harsh immigration policies that deport people indiscriminately, and his sinking approval ratings.

"But Donald Trump is governing without the consent of the governed," White wrote. "Most polls show Trump’s approval hovering around the 40 percent mark. But behind these numbers is a presidency in distress. On handling inflation and the cost of living and immigration — issues that matter to voters — Trump has dismal scores."...

One magic number would likely tip US into recession: Wall Street economists

Economists cautioned whether surging oil prices and soaring tariffs amid the ongoing Iran war could tip the United States into recession and what signs could point to an economic downslide, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The Journal polled 50 economists between March 16-18 from different sectors, including Wall Street banks and small consulting firms and universities, for a survey about what they expect the economic fallout might look like amid the military conflict in the Middle East. Experts did identify one important metric that could show potential signs of economic difficulty.

"Economists put the probability of a recession in the next 12 months at 32%, up modestly from 27% in January," The Journal reported. "Asked how high crude oil would need to climb to tip the recession probability above 50%, economists gave a range of responses: from $90 a barrel to $200, with an average of $138. Asked how long oil prices would need to be at an elevated level, they said from four weeks to 55 weeks, with an average duration of 14 weeks. U.S. oil futures closed at $96.32 a barrel Wednesday, compared with a February average of about $65."...

'Trump became enraged' and used expletives after news of Supreme Court smackdown: report

President Donald Trump was reportedly infuriated Friday after the Supreme Court ruled that his tariffs were illegal.

Trump was hosting the National Governor's Association breakfast with a room full of the nation's governors at the White House when he found out about the high court's decision to strike down Trump's tariffs in a 6-3 vote.

"Apparently the gov breakfast had been going well, they were working together, and then President Trump became enraged. He started ranting about the decision, not only calling it a disgrace, but started attacking the courts at one point saying, these 'f------ courts,'" said CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes. ...
