John Roberts laid a trap to spring on the next president he dislikes: legal experts

Legal experts warned that a recent ruling from the Supreme Court is a trap for future presidents disliked by Chief Justice John Roberts.

During an episode of Slate's Amicus podcast, the Supreme Court's decision in Trump v. Slaughter, which lets Trump fire the heads of independent federal agencies, was flagged as a one-sided gift that will snap shut the moment a Democrat returns to the White House.

Sam Bagenstos, a University of Michigan law professor, predicted on the podcast that the Supreme Court would uphold a future Democratic president firing Trump appointees and cite Slaughter to do it. But the catch will be that when those new appointees try to act, the court "would also find other ways to rein in that Democratic president's power."...

Nothing can stop billionaires from 'running wild' under Trump: fired FTC official

A fired Federal Trade Commission official said Saturday that a recent Supreme Court ruling favoring President Donald Trump will leave billionaires "running wild."

During an appearance on MS NOW, Rebecca Slaughter talked about her Supreme Court case against Trump in which she and another former Federal Trade Commission commissioner, both Democratic appointees, challenged their dismissals.

"I was just profoundly disappointed," Slaughter said about the Supreme Court decision that allowed Trump to fire independent agency commissioners at will....

Nobel laureate flags 'astonishing' SCOTUS ruling MAGA wants 'to sweep under the rug'

A Nobel-winning economist sounded the alarm on a Supreme Court ruling that he fears isn't getting enough attention.

Paul Krugman wrote in a Wednesday Substack piece that after the Supreme Court wrapped up its term, more attention was going towards its defeat of Trump's attempt to end birthright citizenship than a more 'astonishing' decision in the case of Trump v. Slaughter.

"Various MAGA-adjacent parties, along with willfully blind centrists, are trying to sweep this ruling under the rug, hoping that the public doesn't understand its meaning," Krugman wrote. "The Court has now stripped regulatory agencies of their independence from Trump's whims and corrupt practices."...

Supreme Court will test Trump's limits during 'most consequential term': legal expert

Supreme Court will test Trump's limits during 'most consequential term': legal expert

A legal expert Thursday warned that Supreme Court rulings in 2026 will test President Donald Trump's limits of power.

Mike Leon, Anchor of the Legal Podcast Network, told CNN that two cases could be most consequential: Trump v. Slaughter and Trump v. Cook. The Slaughter case could redefine the limits of presidential power over independent agencies and give the Trump more authority to fire officials. This month, the court will hear arguments for the Cook case, involving Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to allow Trump to fire Cook immediately, and has allowed her to stay in office, while the high court's hearing remains pending.

"This is the most consequential term, probably for the court on dockets and cases," Leon said....

'Outcome feels preordained': Supreme Court appears ready to give Trump new 'immense' power

The Supreme Court was expected to hand President Donald Trump more new powers in a case scheduled to begin Monday.

The conservative-leaning high court has planned to hear Trump v. Slaughter, "a case whose outcome feels preordained," according to a Slate report published Thursday.

"The six-justice supermajority is almost certain to fulfill a decadeslong conservative goal to shift an immense amount of power from Congress to President Donald Trump," Slate reported....
