NYPD deploys drones to track subway surfers — air superiority helps cops nab 12-year-old

NYPD air superiority is fighting subway surfing — and the top transit cop says its drone program has nabbed four surfers, including a 12-year-old. Drones are being deployed to spot people who climb on top of subway trains on elevated lines, said NYPD transit chief Michael Kemper. “Over the last several weeks the NYPD has been piloting a drone program that deploys drones near subway lines where we’ve seen very concerning and reckless acts of subway surfing,” Kemper told the MTA’s board. In that time, Kemper said, the drone program has helped the department stop four subway surfers. The youngest......

There has been another shark attack in the Florida Keys. This one was different

MIAMI — For the third time this month, there has been a shark attack in the Florida Keys. On Friday, a fisherman was hospitalized after a shark bite, deputies said. And this time, the shark struck while on land. Around 8 p.m., the 35-year-old was fishing off a dock on Flagship Drive in Sumerland Key, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said. The shark was on the dock with the angler when it took a bite of his foot. It’s unclear if the man, who was not identified, reeled in the shark or how it ended up on the dock. He was flown to Jackson South Medical Center. His condition is unknown, deputies ......

The U.S. Coast Guard said a cutter arrived in Haiti on Friday with the migrants on board. The 190 individuals — 89 men, 55 women and 46 children — were returned to Haiti aboard the cutter Escanaba, the Coast Guard said Friday afternoon. Ten people in the group remained on the ship for further interviews with federal authorities. Coast Guard spok......

Babies rescued from migrant boat in trouble in rough seas off the Florida Keys

MIAMI — A U.S. Coast Guard crewman cradled two babies after rescuing them from a boat struggling in swells of 6 to 10 feet. Their families, and many others, were desperate to get to the United States, in spite of the perilous seas, the risk of being stopped, or worse. Monday’s unfolding drama off the Florida Keys played out with dozens of people attempting to migrate from Haiti with their toddlers and infants. The disabled boat was stopped about 20 nautical miles off Rodriguez Key, a small island off Key Largo, according to law enforcement sources. Coast Guard crews initially rescued 22 people......

7-foot python discovered as an ‘unwelcome stowaway’ on a boat at a Florida marina

MIAMI — A 7-foot-python sneaked onto a sailboat near Indian Key and it wasn’t discovered until the crew docked on the other side of the state, according to the Marco Island Police Department. The awkward discovery was made on Friday in the boat’s shower after Sandy Skwirut and Jim Hart of Chicago docked at Rose Marina on Marco Island, Winknews.com reports. “They were pulling into our dock and getting tied up, and the female occupant of the boat found the snake, I believe in the shower of the boat, and she was face to face with the snake,” Rose Marina General Manager Dan High told the news outl......
