A red state sparked backlash after announcing that it will offer an alternative version of advanced history classes meant to combat the "woke."

Historian Kevin Kruse warned on Bluesky that Sunshine State students could have "to suffer through the Florida Man version" of Advanced Placement U.S. History, and called out a curriculum that frames Florida as always having been Christian, anti-slavery and on the right side of history.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported on Tuesday that Florida will start offering the alternative course as a pilot program in the fall. The state-developed course will offer credit at Florida colleges and universities to compete with the AP course, which offers credit at colleges and universities across the country....

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis earlier this week cut millions of dollars in arts and culture from the Sunshine State's budget over a beloved Tampa-based festival the governor believes is too "sexual," according to The Guardian.

Per the report, DeSantis refused to elaborate during a Thursday press conference on what he meant by "they're doing all this stuff" at the 10-day "Tampa fringe" festival that promotes inclusivity.

Margaret Ledford, who serves as artistic director for City Theatre Miami — a group for middle school students that "lost a $47,000 grant" due to DeSantis' move — said the more than $32 million in funding cuts is "going to be a combination of everything, from tightening our programming and salaries, and going to our patrons, once again, for donations."...

As the son who bears his name testified in the New York City courtroom where Donald Trump is being sued for fraud, the former president Wednesday dropped a Truth Social video detailing plans for a new public university that he said would not condone support of “savages and jihadists.”

“Americans have been horrified to see students and faculty at Harvard and other once-respected universities expressing support for the savages and jihadists who attacked Israel,” Trump wrote.

“They’re turning our students into Communists and terrorist sympathizers. It’s time to offer something dramatically different…’THE AMERICAN ACADEMY.’”...

The modern far-right GOP and its obsession with 'culture war' issues can be compared to trying to fight desegregation efforts, argued former Bill Clinton Secretary of Defense William Cohen on CNN Saturday.

Cohen, who has previously said that former president Donald Trump's disrespect for the security of classified information really amounts to a disrespect for the men and women behind that classified information who put their lives on the line for the country, was asked on CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta about the "far-right Republicans" who argue that culture war add-ons recently passed in the House as part of a military budget "will help rid the military to what they describe as wokeness."

Cohen said he expects that the Senate will either reject the amendments, or water them down enough to get the support needed to pass....

Donald Trump wants to put “woke” to rest.

The former president earlier this week said that he’s “sick” of the catch-all phrase that's used to rile up the conservative base.

“It’s gotten sick, and I don’t like the term woke, because I hear woke, woke, woke,” Trump said Thursday at a Westside Conservative Breakfast in Urbandale, Iowa....
