President Donald Trump recounted a seemingly off-the-cuff remark made during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin — and it has Ukrainians on social media fuming.

During an Oval Office press conference Thursday with Germany's chancellor, Trump likened the war — begun when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukrainian territory — to "two children fighting in a park."

"Sometimes you're better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart. And I gave that analogy to Putin yesterday," Trump said. "I said, president, maybe you're going to have to keep fighting and suffering a lot because both sides are suffering before you pull them apart, before they're able to be pulled apart. ...

On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) gaveled the House of Representatives out for a two-week recess — without holding a vote on a foreign aid package that already passed the US Senate.

Along with funding for Israel and Taiwan, that bill included approximately $60 billion in critically needed aid for Ukraine that would help the US' ally as it struggles to defend its eastern territories against Russian incursion. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) Monday pushed for a peace treaty with Russia as Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded with D.C. lawmakers for financial help fighting his nation's invaders.

"With Zelenskyy in town and Ukraine money running dry, why doesn’t anyone in Washington talk about a peace treaty with Russia," Greene wrote in a tweet on X. "A deal with [Vladimir] Putin promising he will not continue any further invasions."

Ukrainians, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, gathered on Friday in Bucha to mark a year since the town was liberated from Russian occupiers, as officials said Russia continues to attack civilians throughout the country.
