The ‘very, very bad political optics’ of Ted Cruz fleeing Texas for Cancun broken down on MSNBC

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is facing a major political scandal after fleeing Texas during a disaster to vacation in Cancun.

Cruz had reportedly originally planned to stay in Cancun until Saturday, as Congress is on vacation, but changed his plans following the harsh criticism he was receiving. As part of his attempts at damage control, Cruz attempted to blame his vacation on his daughters.

To better understand the situation, MSNBC's Katy Tur interviewed Abby Livingston, the DC bureau chief for the Texas Tribune.

"I mean, first of all, I will remind the audience that we're in the middle of a pandemic and many Texans are not traveling," Livingston noted.

"People are filling toilets with pool water. This is becoming a desperate situation," she explained. "I had a former Senate aide tell me today that if this situation happened under his boss's watch and it was a staffer, not the senator, the staffer would have been fired if they travelled out of the country during a situation like this," she explained. "This is just very, very bad political optics."
