Tom Kean Jr. ousted months after mysterious disappearance from Congress

A New Jersey Republican who was absent from Capitol Hill for months this year lost his seat Tuesday.

Democrat Rebecca Bennett defeated Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, NBC News projected. The Associated Press called the race for Bennett at 9:48 p.m. ET, Gothamist reported. Kean called Bennett to concede, ABC7 New York reported.

Bennett is a former Navy helicopter pilot and healthcare executive. She outraised Kean nearly $8.2 million to $5.9 million over the course of the race, CBS News reported.

Kean, the son of former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean, was gone from Washington for more than three months and missed more than 140 roll call votes over what he described only as an unspecified medical issue. He later disclosed he had been hospitalized for depression. Top super PACs pulled spending in support of Kean in his campaign's final weeks, NBC reported.
