Trump narrowly avoids judge's wrath in 'certainly troubling' case against ex-CIA boss

President Donald Trump appears to have narrowly avoided a judge's wrath in a lawsuit that he filed against a former CIA boss who investigated the president's ties to Russia.

Former CIA Director John Brennan sued Trump and several high-ranking administration officials in July, arguing that the administration has vindictively prosecuted him for allegedly making false statements to Congress and as part of the president's "grand conspiracy" probe. Brennan sought to force the government to preserve internal communications about their decision to charge him.

However, Judge Gia M. Cobb of the District of Columbia found that the reasoning Brennan provided to preserve those communications wasn't enough, even though the evidence the former CIA chief brought to the table was "certainly troubling."

For instance, Brennan noted that Trump and his associates had deleted social media posts about the decision to pursue charges against him, shredded hard-copy evidence, and leaked National Security information through a Signal group chat.

The judge was apparently unconvinced.

"He asserts that he still has standing regardless, because he has pled facts which show that each step of the chain 'will lead inexorably' to the other ... But the facts Brennan pleads — which, taken as true, are certainly troubling — imply not an inexorable injury, but a speculative one."
