Salon columnist Amanda Marcotte on Monday dissected the defense that DePape tried to use to get himself acquitted and she said that its failure looks like an ominous omen for former President Donald Trump.

Former President Donald Trump's history of racist rhetoric has been amplified over the course of his political career. In an August report, PBS News notes the 2024 MAGA hopeful "has used terms such as 'animal' and 'rabid' to describe Black district attorneys. He has accused Black prosecutors of being 'racist.' He has made unsupported claims about their personal lives. And on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump has deployed terms that rhyme with racial slurs as some of his supporters post racist screeds about the same targets."

During Sunday's episode of MSNBC's Velshi, guest host Charles Coleman Jr. spoke with Yale University professor of philosophy Jason Stanley about the ways race has shown up amid Trump's legal troubles.

"The View's" Ana Navarro was once a dedicated Republican, but Donald Trump changed that. After years of speaking out against him, the Latina commentator questioned what was really going on with the Spanish network Univision.

“It was a ridiculous interview. It was embarrassing. It was an interview with no pushback,” Navarro blasted. “You would have thought they were interviewing Barney the dinosaur. It was a love fest.”

The celebrity gossip site TMZ couldn't help but notice that during Donald Trump's Iowa speech Sunday, he once again brought up a supposed tape that showed him watching lewd acts in a Russian hotel room once used by former President Barack Obama.

Among the stories in the dossier about Trump that was passed around Capitol Hill during the 2016 election season was one that while in Russia, Trump rented a specific hotel room previously used by his least favorite president and hired prostitutes to urinate on the bed as he looked on.

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance doesn't anticipate Donald Trump will do well before the panel of Washington, D.C., judges on Monday as he appeals the gag order issued in one of his four top cases.

"I think he has limited chances of success here. Because this is a very narrowly tailored restraining order," Vance said. "The judge was careful to say that she was not having any intention or any limitation on his rights to engage in political speech. She lets him have broad latitude there. What he cannot do is engage in the kind of comments that could put people in harm's way, folks involved in the court proceedings, or that could impair the integrity of the process. It's a very limited, highly legal sort of restraining order that we are used to seeing engaged in cases like this, where, frankly, a defendant is incapable of avoiding trying their case in public. Cases are meant to be tried in the courtroom."

Former President Donald Trump is increasingly embracing his crude side, but Washington Post coverage from his latest Iowa rally revealed that the Republicans there not only loving it, but they're also "relishing" it.

Trump has always been far from one of the prude elders in his generation, but his profanity, "crass" insults, and "vulgarities" are consistently growing. According to the report, however, it's now being promoted by the normally friendly and polite midwesterners of Iowa.

In a column for MSNBC, former U.S. House Judiciary Committee counsel Michael Conway implored Judge Arthur Engoron to be careful with the language he uses as he oversees the $250 million financial fraud civil suit filed against Donald Trump and his Trump Organization.

Using the trial of the so-called “Chicago 7" as a jumping-off point, the attorney reminded Engoron that the defendants in that notorious case went out of their way to antagonize Judge Julius Hoffman which seems to be Donald Trump's strategy in a case where Engoron has already found evidence of fraud.

Former President Donald Trump decided to lavish praise on "wheels and walls" at an event near the Texas border.

While speaking to a crowd in Edinburgh, Texas, on Sunday, Trump claimed that "our country is going to hell."

Speaking with MSNBC host Jen Psaki on Sunday afternoon, former Solicitor General Neal Katyal explained that a ruling by District Judge Sarah B. Wallace on Friday may have kept Donald Trump on the Colorado ballot for now but it could blow up on him at a later date.

Katyal was quick to note that Judge Wallace agreed with the petitioners that the former president took part in an insurrection at the end of his term but used a narrow interpretation to say he is not in violation of the 14th Amendment.

According to the legal analyst, the ruling was "the very worst decision Trump could get."

'If I were to put the headline on Friday, as an appeals lawyer, it would be this is the very worst decision Donald Trump could get from the trial court," he began. "Because it's going to go on appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court, perhaps the U.S. Supreme Court and there Trump is going to face extreme headwinds."

"And the reason for that is the fact — there's two parts," he continued. "There's a factual finding, that the judge said, which is Trump committed insurrection, and then there's a legal part that the 14th Amendment doesn't apply to the office of the presidency. On appeals, Jen, the factual findings get massive deference by the appeals court. It's almost impossible to overturn a trial judge's factual finding."

"You can overturn the legal findings, because that's basically a fresh look at the legal thing and, here, this judge factually made devastating findings against Trump," he elaborated. "And then looked at this legal technicality, which is the 14th Amendment doesn't apply to the office of the president, which is so weak, even the judge themselves admitted that this would be preposterous."

CBS host Margaret Brennan fact-checked Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) after he suggested President Joe Biden's possession of classified documents was more severe than former President Donald Trump's hoarding of national security secrets.

On Sunday's Face the Nation program, Brennan noted that CBS has reported that the special counsel's office is not expected to bring tax fraud charges against Biden's son Hunter.

CNN's "State of the Union" panel ended in laughter on Sunday after a former President Joe Biden official reminded a GOP operative that Donald Trump has a major problem gaining voters outside his rabid base.

Discussing the potential match-up between the current president and the four-time indicted former president, Republican party campaign adviser Scott Jennings asserted Trump has the advantage because he has a locked-in base.

That led former Biden White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield to point out that Trump can't count on any voters beyond his base because independents are strongly aligned against him.

"What is more likely?" Jennings asked, "That Donald Trump could hold his core base together, or that Joe Biden with his problems with African American voters, with his problems with young voters who think he hasn't kept his promises, could hold its base together?"

"I think it is far more likely that Trump could hold his base again," he asserted.

"But Trump can't speak to the middle like Joe Biden can," Bedingfield interrupted before adding, "So the numbers under your scenario, the numbers can't get Trump there," which led to the laughter from off-screen panelists.
