Ex-Resistance Olympic torch-bearer still wants to 'change the world'

At the age of 102, Melanie Berger-Volle will carry the Olympic torch as high as she can, despite her fragile shoulder, to champion the values of friendship between peoples that she defended during her time with the French Resistance in the Second World War.

A "woman in the shadows" during the Occupation (1940-1944), Berger-Volle was thrilled to be chosen to carry the torch as it passes through Saint-Etienne on June 22 on its way to Paris for the start of the Olympic Games.

Vietnam sentences billionaire to death for white collar fraud

As global billionaires see their wealth soar to record heights, one Vietnamese real estate tycoon was sentenced to death on Thursday in the Southeast Asian nation's largest-ever financial fraud case, part of a government crackdown on corruption.

Tru'o'ng Mỹ Lan, founder of the real estate developer Vạn Thịnh Phát Group, was arrested in October 2022 for illegally controlling and embezzling money from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) for a decade after a 2011 merger she arranged.

European diplomats have reportedly been blitzing Washington to meet with allies of former President Donald Trump to gauge how he would handle foreign policy crises in the region should he win a second term.

CNN reported Thursday that chief among Europe's concerns about Trump winning the November election are how he may change the US' relationship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and whether he would be committed to helping Ukraine fend off the ongoing Russian offensive in its easternmost regions. Argentina court blames Iran for deadly 1994 bombing of Jewish center

Over three decades after deadly attacks in Buenos Aires targeted Israel's embassy and a Jewish center, an Argentine court placed the blame Thursday on Iran and declared it a "terrorist state," according to local media.

The ruling, cited by press reports, said Iran had ordered the attack in 1992 on Israel's embassy and the 1994 attack on the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) Jewish center.

Peru court sentences killers of Indigenous land defenders

A Peruvian court on Thursday imposed near three-decade sentences on five men who were being retried for the murders of four Indigenous Amazon land defenders who had crossed swords with illegal loggers.

IMF head: Global economy weak on low productivity
