UPDATE:
The FAA reported that the flights were so quickly scrambled because of an unresponsive Cessna Citation.

Freelancer Andrew Leyden uploaded a flight track of the N611VG showing the plane flying to New York before making a U-turn and flying directly over Washington, D.C., which is restricted air space. At the end the aircraft descended quickly. It could have been a practice exercise or a security incident. The flight took off from Blountville, TN, and either crashed or landed in Staunton, VA.
The pilot continued to be unresponsive and there are unconfirmed reports of a crash in the Virginia mountains.
According to Reuters, "A U.S. official said the jet fighters did not cause the crash."
Residents in the Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland (DMV) metro areas report hearing a massive boom in the area.
It hasn't yet been reported whether it was a sonic boom, the sound made when a plane breaks the sound barrier, or if it was an explosion.
Regardless, it registered seismic activity about 7 miles south of Washington, D.C.
The Philadelphia Phillies were playing the Washington Nationals at the time, but the sound wasn't related to any fireworks or celebration at the stadium.
Another person suggested a meteorite, but there aren't any signs of one yet. There also isn't any smoke being reported by observers.
"This is how big it was. I am on Capitol Hill, and it was extremely loud. People say, windows rattled in Shaw, etc.," said Hussein Ibish, the senior resident scholar at Gulf States Institute.
But that's exactly what Andrew Leyden, a freelancer in Maryland, swore happened. He reported air aficionados watching air traffic, claiming that the sound was possibly DC Air National Guard and an F-16 from Atlantic City.
"Seems there was Alert Scramble near DC area. and Atlantic City F-16 COSMIC," one individual said.
A Nest camera in a garage in Edgewater, MD, showed whatever it was rattled the attic panel. A Ring doorbell camera recorded the boom as well in Bowie, MD. Another video was posted from Odenton, MD.
A Fairfax, VA, couple was recording a song when they heard the sound, and their house could be heard shaking.
Neighbors all over northern Virginia also reported the sound on their local neighborhood sites.
The Department of Defense confirmed to the Annapolis Office of Emergency Management that "the loud boom that was heard across the DMV area was caused by an authorized DOD flight. This flight caused a sonic boom. That is all the information available at this time."

Salon columnist Nathaniel Manderson is searching for ways to break up Donald Trump and the evangelical community that followed him. The introduction of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has given some churches the opportunity to support a candidate that isn't tied to over two dozen sexual assault accusations. But some evangelical pastors are refusing to abandon the former president.
Manderson mentioned DeSantis' war against LGBTQ people, which was once a strong link between Republicans and the far-right religious community. But as public opinion has changed, the fight against LGBTQ equality means Republicans risk alienating younger voters.
"It is not supposed to be the church's job to force particular lifestyle choices [on] individuals," wrote Manderson. "First of all, the theology that has arisen claiming that Jesus would be opposed to the LGBTQ community is incredibly flawed. Even if it weren't, the church has no right to declare how a family should be formed. It is a waste of time and resources, not to mention against the most basic principles of both Christian faith itself and American individual freedom."
He also argued that there's nothing in the Bible about abortion or evangelical politics. In fact, it's only been in recent years that billions of dollars were contributed to create an evangelical political agenda. Selective passages from scripture have been used in an effort to control women in American homes, in the American workplace, and in American society overall."
These are just a few ways to "expose the so-called shepherds as the anti-Christians and anti-American hypocrites they are."
Meanwhile, there continue to be questions about why the evangelical church doesn't do more to help communities that Jesus Christ supported, like orphans, the homeless, widows, the sick, the elderly and the handicapped as evangelical churches continue to take money from low-income families to fund private jets and luxury homes.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Sunday compared President Joe Biden's alleged scandals to what he claimed was "deviancy" of LGBTQ+ people.
During Sunday's Uncovering the Truth on WABC, Giuliani noted that Republicans planned to meet with the FBI over documents they believe will show evidence of corruption.
"But to sit by and watch a guy get elected president who's been a thirty-year bribe taker," Giuliani said.
"Well, it's that defining deviancy down," co-host Maria Ryan agreed. "Once you do that and you start getting used to certain things."
"It's almost like gays, right?" she added. "At one time in this population, it was really frowned upon. It was misunderstood whatever, and now it's accepted, and they have equal rights. So you just get used to certain things."
Ryan said she had probably not used the "best example" by comparing gay people to Biden.
"No, no, I think it's not the best example, but it is a good example in this sense," Giuliani remarked. "You take anything to an extreme, and you can get into the area of deviancy. Look, heterosexuals can be deviants. Nothing wrong with gay, nothing wrong with lesbian except if it morphs into pedophilia."
Ryan interrupted to suggest same-sex attraction was unnatural.
"It does go against nature, though, I do have to say that," she opined. "Our bodies are meant to procreate. That's what our bodies were meant to do, a man and a woman."
