An unknown virus has infected the control systems for the U.S. military's fleet of Predator and Reaper drones, an exclusive report filed by Wired's Noah Shachtman revealed on Friday.

While officials aren't quite sure where the virus came from, it could be something as simple as common malware that's lingered on military systems for an unknown amount of time.

The malicious code has reportedly been eradicated from military systems several times, only to return over and over, according to an unnamed source.

The software contains a keylogger that may have been sending information to parts unknown over the Internet. Wired noted that it has infected systems that handle both common information and classified materials.

It is quite possible that information was sent outside the U.S. chain of command, but officials either aren't sure or aren't saying, according to Wired.
