The New York City Fire Department has welcomed a transgender woman to its male-dominated team. The New York Post reported she is the first transgender firefighter in the city's history.

The tall blonde, named Brooke, is a third generation firefighter and has been assigned to the Metrotech headquarters, a department comprised almost exclusively of men.

While most of her fellow firefighters have been supportive, some have taken to calling her "it."

"Being transgender is just one part of who a person is and we are encouraged to hear her coworkers realize she is the same person and can be true to herself at work," Lisa Mottet, a transgender rights attorney at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, told ABC News.

Brooke has refused to disclose her last name or other personal details for the sake of her privacy.
