Scientists are to set off on a research expedition to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch on May 20. The patch is a huge mass of rubbish held in place by swirling underwater currents in the north-east of the Pacific Ocean. This build-up of marine debris is a danger to many marine mammals, birds and underwater ecosystems.
DeSantis-promoted doc who said kids don't need to be vaccinated facing investigation from medical board
Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) held an event at the state Capitol in Tallahassee talking about the skepticism around masks. Among those on hand as an "expert" was Mark McDonald, a Los Angeles clinical psychiatrist.
A transcript acquired by the Daily Beast after the event revealed that McDonald attacked mask-mandates, specifically singling out his home state of California as a "medical apartheid state" after they reinstituted mask mandates following another increase in cases.
"There is no medical rationale for vaccinating children," he told The Daily Beast at the time. He also suggested masks and vaccines "don't work."
When asked about McDonald's comments by reporter Nancy Levine, the Medical Board of California said that they are examining McDonald for the comments.
"California licensed physicians and surgeons are required to follow the Medical Practice Act and the standard of care when treating patients and not doing so may subject their license to disciplinary action," the statement read. "The Board is aware of the statements made by the physician and will be looking into it."
McDonald wasn't the only so-called "expert" that DeSantis has based his COVID-19 decisions on, but he's certainly the latest to be discredited.
Florida is the third largest state by population in the U.S. and accounts for over 1 in 5 new COVID cases.
DeSantis refuses to declare state of emergency for COVID -- and it's leaving hospitals short of oxygen: report
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is determined to declare the novel coronavirus pandemic over, even as his state this week shattered its own records for COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations.
Bloomberg reports that DeSantis's refusal to re-declare a state of emergency over the pandemic is leaving Florida hospitals scrambling to secure enough oxygen to treat COVID patients who are struggling to breathe.
Essentially, unless DeSantis declares a state of emergency, then there are limits to how long medical support transport drivers can be on the road.
Because hospitals are now getting flooded with COVID-19 patients, this means that there simply are not enough drivers who have enough time to deliver the needed oxygen supplies.
Soumi Saha, vice president of advocacy for hospital supply purchasing group Premier Inc., said that waiving limits on transportation restrictions is the single best way to get oxygen supplies where they're needed.
"Hospitals are fighting with a hand tied behind their back and don't have the same chance that they did when states had the public health emergencies declared," she explained to Bloomberg.
DeSantis has been lashing out in recent days as criticism has mounted of his refusal to do more to fight the pandemic. On Tuesday he accused President Joe Biden of "singling out" his state for its surge in COVID infections, which he baselessly blamed on infected migrants entering the country.
The mother of an alleged MAGA rioter wound up inadvertently getting her son arrested after she boasted about him storming the Capitol on Facebook.
Via Huffington Post's Ryan J. Reilly, a newly filed criminal complaint alleges that 39-year-old Washington state resident Tyler Slaeker engaged in violent and disorderly conduct while illegally trespassing on restricted grounds during the infamous January 6th riots.
While Slaeker's participation in the riots wasn't very remarkable, the manner in which law enforcement officials discovered him was.
As the complaint explains, Slaeker's mother posted photos that he'd taken from the Capitol on her Facebook page and relayed his descriptions of what he said was going on during the deadly riots.
"They entered the Capitol building -- there is pepper spray going on -- police are shutting down the building now," she said in one post.
Slaeker's mother also tried to claim that the rioters storming the Capitol were largely peaceful, and she said that "[t]he pictures tyler sent of the crowds show normal, middle class, even older crowds" inside the building.
Two people who were friends with Slaeker's mother on Facebook took screen shots of the posts and shared them with law enforcement officials, who proceeded to arrest the alleged MAGA rioter shortly after.
