A Florida man killed his wife and teenage son with a crossbow at their home and went to kill his older son at college, investigators said.

Broward County sheriff’s deputies said 53-year-old Pedro José Maldonado Sr. used a hand-held weapon that shoots small arrows to fatally shoot Monica Narvaez-Maldonado, 47, and Pedro José Maldonado Jr., 17, sometime Monday at their townhouse in Weston.

Maldonado then drove to Tallahassee, where 21-year-old José Maldonado attends Florida State University, and attacked him shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Detectives said the older Maldonado tried to shoot his son with the crossbow, but he managed to turn and suffered only a minor ear wound.

He then tried to choke his son, who managed to escape and run away.

The son did not report the attack, but the elder Maldonado called a friend and admitted to killing his wife and younger son, and that friend immediately notified authorities.

Investigators found the pair’s bodies in the townhouse, and authorities tracked him to a motel in Columbia County, where they found early Wednesday that he’d slit his throat in a bathroom.
