Watch: The 13th Amendment didn’t end slavery
Today Netflix released the trailer for 13th, the forthcoming documentary by Ava DuVernay (Selma). The title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”
This amendment, which students across America learn “outlawed slavery,” doesn’t quite live up to that hype. Rather, as scholars like Michelle Alexander and Angela Davis have pointed out, it serves as the link between slavery and the “new Jim Crow,” otherwise known as the sprawling web of mass incarceration.
