The women of “The View” were furious on Tuesday, after a video surfaced of a white supremacist conference in which attendees chanted “Heil Trump” and raised their hands in a Nazi salute.
“My father and uncles did not fight in World War II against Nazism to have these creeps get air time on the news. Even on this show!” co-host Joy Behar shouted.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg explained that the reason they cover issues like this are to make sure the public knows that they’re there. If there is coverage, the Nazis and white supremacists can’t hide. “People need to know that this is what happens when you stir the base up,” Goldberg explained.
“I get that Donald Trump has other things to do than, you know, belittle the cast of ‘Hamilton,’ because, you know, he thought they were being disrespectful to Pence,” she continued. “Or call out the media and talk about all the stuff they didn’t do for him, after they gave him a podium for the last two years. But to these guys, ‘Well, yeah, racism is bad.’ That was his response to this.”
Co-host Sunny Hostin noted that Trump was the same candidate who criticized President Barack Obama and Secretary Clinton for not using the words “radical Islamic terrorists.”
“You must say the words!” Hostin mimicked Trump. “Well, President Trump, you must say ‘the alt-right is a white supremacists group’ and denounce it and you don’t stand by it! And I think we all need to know that we’re calling it the ‘alt-right.’ Now, the person we just saw in that video is the person that coined that phrase. Don’t call it the alt-right, call it what it is. It’s white supremacy. And I think we are sort of normalizing this movement by calling it the alt-right and we all need to stop doing that.”
Jedediah Bila noted that there’s something wrong with Trump if he can’t denounce this.
“You know, Lady Liberty is green!” Goldberg proclaimed. “There is room for everybody in America. Whether it’s Kermit the Frog, Lady Liberty, me, you, America is a melting pot. America was never just all white. Ever. The Native Americans were here first!”
Co-host Joy Behar explained that this all began when Trump “threw in the gauntlet with this birther BS.” That’s when Behar said that the alt-right decided that Trump was their man.
