According to one Republican senator, President Donald Trump may not actually know what is in the bill he was lobbying this afternoon during a closed-door meeting.
Buried in a New York Times recap of Tuesday's GOP meeting with Trump was an anonymous quote from a senate staffer who attended the event at the White House.
"A senator who supports the bill left the meeting at the White House with a sense that the president did not have a grasp of some basic elements of the Senate plan — and seemed especially confused when a moderate Republican complained that opponents of the bill would cast it as a massive tax break for the wealthy," the Times reported a senate staffer revealed.
The senator also said that Trump said he would navigate tax reform later, and seemed to ignore the tax implications that are part of the new health bill.
Trump then went on to declare victory of the meeting.
“I just finished a great meeting with the Republican Senators concerning HealthCare,” he tweeted. “They really want to get it right, unlike OCare!”
"If we don't get it done it's just going to be something that we're not going to like and that's OK and I understand that very well," Trump said before the press was asked to leave the meeting.
