Former Donald Trump aide Rick Gates—who was indicted alongside former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort last October—may be mulling the decision to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, CNN reports.
According to CNN, Gates has retained white-collar attorney Tom Green, who met with Mueller twice in the past week. Though Green is not listed in the court record as a lawyer for Gates, he is believed to be negotiating with Mueller on behalf of the onetime Trump associate.
Gates at risk for superseding indictments from Mueller, which would tack on additional charges beyond those of money laundering and failing to register as an agent of a foreign government.
Green declined to say whether he represented Gates. But, as CNN notes, he’s “one of the biggest names in Washington's white-collar defense world.”
"If I were in trouble, I'd call out to somebody like Tom,” white-collar lawyer Carol Bruce said.
