Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) on Monday was “rendered speechless” by Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) claim that he has “consistently opposed shutdowns,” CNN reports.
"Look, we shouldn't be shutting the government down. I have consistently opposed shutdowns. In 2013, I said we shouldn't be shutting the government down," Cruz said on Monday. ”I went to the Senate floor repeatedly asking unanimous consent to reopen the government."
Cruz was a key player in the 2013 shutdown, leading the charge against the Affordable Care Act. Democrats and members of Cruz’s own party blamed the Texas senator for prompting a shutdown and became an obstacle in trying to reopen the federal government.
As CNN reports, when reminded that he “stood in the way” of options to avoid the last government shutdown, Cruz replied that was "factually incorrect and a wonderful media narrative.”
Collins and the “media” are probably not the only people rendered speechless by Cruz’s statement.
