ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl grilled Trump's top spokeswoman on Tuesday over the president's tweets about former aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman.
President Donald Trump slammed Omarosa as a "dog" and a "lowlife" after she released recordings of private conversations she had in the White House.
"Is this any way for a president to talk about any American?" he asked. "Let alone somebody he hired and made the highest ranking African-American woman in his White House?"
Sanders insisted that Trump was voicing his frustration with Omarosa.
"Why did he hire somebody he is describing as a dog, as a lowlife," Karl pressed.
"The president wanted to give her a chance," Sanders replied.
