In a tweet posted Tuesday afternoon, Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray Caso hit back on Donald Trump's proclamation that the country will "ultimately" pay for a border wall.

"We just reached a trade understanding with the US, and the outlook for the relationship between our two countries is very positive," the foreign minister wrote. "We will NEVER pay for a wall, however. That has been absolutely clear from the very beginning."

Just a day after talks with a Mexican delegation in the White House that led to a trade deal, Trump insisted to reporters that the country will pay for his campaign promise border wall at the Mexico-United States border.

"Yeah, the wall will be paid for very easily, by Mexico,” the president said. “It will ultimately be paid for by Mexico."

The Washington Post noted that Videgaray Caso was among the Mexican officials who met with Trump in the Oval Office on August 27.
