This reporter mocked Trump supporters as toothless ‘garbage people’ – and now conservatives are freaking out
President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday featured an angry mob lashing out at the press. When a Politico reporter derided those lashing out at the press, conservatives lashed out online in offense.
From the media area, CNN’s Jim Acosta posted a video of the “sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa.”
Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa. I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt. We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy. pic.twitter.com/IhSRw5Ui3R# p #3_25 # ad skipped = true #

The video features a man in a “f*ck the media” T-shirt and three different people giving the middle finger.
Acosta said, “I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt.”
Veteran Florida politico reporter Marc Caputo retweeted Acosta’s video, adding, “if you put everyone’s mouths together in this video, you’d get a full set of teeth.”
Breitbart News’ Joel Pollak claimed that Caputo’s tweet was, “why Americans hate the news media.”
At first, Caputo mocked those who took outrage over his comments on the oral hygiene of Trump’s Florida supporters.
Caputo mocked one critic by saying, “snowflake has a sad.”
In another deleted tweet, Caputo wrote, “Oh, no! I made fun of garbage people jeering at another person as they falsely accused him of lying and flipped him off.”
“Someone fetch a fainting couch,” he joked.
Never forget that the people who swear at strangers, flip them the bird, yell lies about them or excuse the aforementioned are hateful people https://t.co/bMO1Le89RQ# p #13_25 # ad skipped = true #

On Wednesday morning, Caputo apologized.
I need to apologize for tweeting caustic remarks after seeing a reporter berated & abused. Hate begets hate. My comments referred ONLY to those jeering and swearing at the man, not a broad swath of people. But the fault is mine for causing confusion and feeding anger. 1/3# p #16_25 # ad skipped = true #

In the age of social media, where divisiveness serves no decent purpose, these flippant comments on my part only made things worse and contributed to a cycle of rage that I should not have inflamed further. So I'm sorry. 2/3# p #18_25 # ad skipped = true #

While it’s usually a good idea to just delete tweets that are wrong, I own this and the criticism (both accurate and misleading) that has followed. I'll do better. Here they are: 3/3 pic.twitter.com/G2rZrHjYWb# p #21_25 # ad skipped = true #
