Congressional Democrats are rapidly embracing a bold plan by Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) demanding Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) create a Select Climate Committee — and only include members who refuse to accept campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry.
Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, has been asking her supporters to back a “Green New Deal” plan by establishing the select committee.
On Saturday she asked her supporters to contact their congressional representative on Twitter and “call them on Monday, too.”
On Sunday evening, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) became the 10th member of the Democratic Party caucus to back the proposal.
Here is what some of the Democrats have been tweeting about their support.
I welcome the energy/urgency from @Ocasio2018 & @sunrisemvmt in proposing #GreenNewDeal. I support that & will also keep working on multiple specific, ambitious climate bills I've been championing for years. Let's work together to meet this environmental/economic/moral imperative

.@Ocasio2018 is right about climate change. We need to think very seriously about the planet we want to leave for our children and grandchildren. Democrats need to become the party for bold climate action including a Green New Deal. https://t.co/mUFotWw5Ic

As a millennial, I firmly believe #climatechange is the defining issue of our time. Proud to join @Ocasio2018 & others in pushing for a select Congressional committee. #copolitics https://t.co/QP3w97aR0d

As the vice chair of the last Select Committee on Global Warming & Energy Independence, I am thrilled to see renewed energy & passion about getting it started again trying to create a #GreenNewDeal to create jobs & help those most impacted by climate disruption & toxic pollution.

“I have proudly stood with the water protectors at Standing Rock for a safer environment. One of my first priorities in Congress will be to fight for a Green New Deal, a congressional climate commission, and 100% renewable energy.”
