Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum lost a close race to Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis, CNN reports.
Gillum had pulled ahead in polling in the final few weeks of the election as Ron DeSantis cozied up to President Donald Trump and his far-right policies. FiveThirtyEight predictions had showed Gillum 4.2 percent ahead of DeSantis on Election Day. Turnout was exceedingly higher than expected and the youth vote in the state was particularly large.
In wake of Hurricane Maria, many Puerto Ricans moved to South Florida and they’ve expressed their frustration with the president’s inability to help as the territory struggled to rebuild.
