'A very sobering thing': CNN's Jeffrey Toobin explains the gravity of the DOJ calling Trump a felon

The United States government believes President Donald Trump is a felon, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said Friday night.

In the wake of Friday's bombshell legal filings in the cases of former Trump campaign boss Paul Manafort and Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen, Toobin said the facts make it clear that Trump violated campaign law by directing Cohen to pay off women he had sex with in the run-up to the 2016 election.

"The Department of Justice today, in the most explicit terms, said the President of the United States committed two felonies," he said. "Just came out and said it... it's just plain as day."

Toobin said that we don't yet know what will happen next, but that these revelations were "a very important assertion in a legal document by the Department of Justice" and "a very sobering thing."

"Congress is going to have to decide what if anything to do about that," he said. "But it is an extraordinary thing that the Department of Justice said the President of the United States committed these crimes."
