Treasury secretary mocked for apparently making up Trump quote with 'long articulate sentence'
Steve Mnuchin appears on Fox News (screen grab)

On Friday night, Bloomberg broke the news that President Donald Trump is considering firing the chairman of the Federal Reserve because he blames him for the slumping stock market.

On Saturday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin attempted to quell talk of the firing, which may not be legal and could send markets into a tailspin, with a quote he attributed to Trump.

I totally disagree with Fed policy. I think the increasing of interest rates and the shrinking of the Fed portfolio is an absolute terrible thing to do at this time, especially in light of my major trade negotiations which are ongoing, but I never suggested firing Chairman Jay Powell, nor do I believe I have the right to do so," Mnuchin said.

However, Mnuchin's quote was quickly mocked by Twitter users who pointed out that Trump never seems to say he doesn't have the right to do something, nor does he use the word "nor."
