Trump-defending Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is somewhat adrift now that special counsel Robert Mueller's probe is complete — and is not sure he'll stick around once the president leaves town.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Gaetz admitted that Donald Trump is his raison d'etre.

"I don’t know how I’d fit into this place in the absence of the president," the Florida Republican said of Congress and Washington.

Gaetz said that it "feels good to be right" about the Mueller report — and apologized for testy comments he'd made prior to its submission.

“I kept like, responding with these trite or impish news of the day type of responses,” he said of an earlier discussion with BuzzFeed News. “A reasonable person in your shoes might have walked out of that discussion thinking I’m just here to flick at people.”

“Defending the president is not an end unto itself,” Gaetz said, adding that he does so “in service to my desire to make this town a better place.”
