Ex-State Dept official exposes Trump’s governing pattern: ‘He gets an idea in his head and then Ann Coulter calls him an idiot’

Former Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that President Donald Trump's threat to close the U.S.-Mexico border were part of a familiar pattern that would ultimately make the president look foolish.

"I think it's shaping up to be another one of the situations where he just completely doesn't understand the situation, the dynamics, the politics back in Washington," Reines said. "This is feeling in the early days of the shutdown, where he feels he gets an idea in his head and he gets a lot of the right wing to say 'shut it, shut it.'"

"And when it practically comes time to shut it, it starts going badly," Reines continued. "You'll start getting pictures of students who can't get across the border, people can't get to hospitals and it will start looking not so great."

"Any minute then, Ann Coulter will emerge with one of her tweets calling him an idiot and Mitch McConnell will sit there laughing because he knows there's nothing he can do," he went on. "At the end of the day, it's Republican-on-Republican violence. He can blame Nancy Pelosi all he wants but this has been going on two years prior to the midterms."

"Jeb, Paul Ryan, Speaker Boehner, I'm not sure if I'm missing any," Reines added. "If any of those three had been president, you actually would get the things done that Trump is trying."
