Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) is an avid Buckeye and supporter of Ohio State University, the main rival of the University of Michigan. But in a since-deleted post on X, Vance attacked the city of Detroit for their public utilities and blasted the state.

PatriotTakes, a group that monitors and researches right-wing extremism, shared a Vance post reading: "Maybe Michigan should have used some of that money for Detroit's public utilities. #GoBucks #michiganstillsucks."

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) spent much of this week trying to preempt Vice President Kamala Harris's public events, turning up to speak in Philadelphia on Tuesday and Michigan on Wednesday before big Democratic Party rallies in the same locations.

But some are arguing the strategy is proving problematic.

Appearing on CNN Wednesday to discuss the selection of Gov. Tim Walz as the Democratic vice presidential nominee, one of his Republican Party predecessors in Minnesota's governor's office ended the interview trying to put a positive spin on Ohio Republican Sen. J. D. Vance's bumbling entry into the race.

But before he got to that point, Tim Pawlenty laughed when CNN's John Berman mentioned Donald Trump's roll-out efforts when Vance was introduced to the nation.

Vance faced this question during a press conference in Michigan as he made the case that Trump's much-criticized attacks on Harris' racial identity reflected broader concerns about her shifting politics.
