President Donald Trump's Department of Justice issued a response Friday after a MAGA influencer's arrest in Portland, Oregon, criticizing the "woke cops" who arrested him.
Harmeet K. Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, announced via X that an investigation into the arrest of Nick Sortor was underway, sharing a letter with demands for City Attorney Robert Taylor and Bob Day, chief of police.
"Acting at the direction of our @AGPamBondi, we @CivilRights have launched an investigation into Portland, OR’s highly questionable police practices. Stay tuned. We will not leave the people of Portland at the whims of criminals and woke cops. Govern yourselves accordingly!" Dhillon wrote.
In the letter, she argued that police arrested Sortor but not others who may have been involved in the altercation. She also claimed that police did not arrest the "individuals who allegedly assaulted Katie Daviscourt," another MAGA influencer, and alleged that the city and police have blocked ICE's access to the facility.
“The City of Portland reportedly has attempted to use its policing powers through a zoning enforcement action to limit ICE’s use of its Portland facility," she wrote.
Early Friday morning, MAGA influencer Nick Sortor was released from a Portland jail cell after allegedly getting in a street fight with anti-ICE protesters late Thursday night near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, reports CNN.
In a video posted to X and Bluesky, Sortor can be seen being put in restraints by Portland police officers on bikes as onlookers taunted him with “You dumbs---,” and "What a f------ loser."
According to the CNN report, local police were dispatched to the area over reports of skirmishes and "continued to monitor the situation and responded after seeing additional fights break out. A bureau Rapid Response Team arrested Sortor and the two Oregonians, police said.”
Sortor has reportedly been involved in other altercations in the past while reporting. Daviscourt was apparently hit in the eye with a flag pole and had a black eye.
Sortor wrote on X after he was released that he kept the burning flag he grabbed altercation and warned police they made a "big freaking mistake."
"You PROVED what we’ve all been saying for years: you’re CORRUPT and CONTROLLED by vioIent Antifa thugs who terrorize the streets. You thought arresting me would make me shut up and go away. You couldn’t have been more wrong. Stay tuned."
