Donald Trump says he wants to speak with Robert Mueller -- but his lawyers say it's a bad idea: NYT

The New York Times reported Wednesday that President Donald Trump asked his attorneys to go back to special counsel Robert Mueller to negotiate a meeting.

In recent days, the president has raged about Michael Cohen, Paul Manafort, Robert Mueller and the probe along with his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has appeared on cable news. According to reporter Maggie Haberman, however, Giuliani swore that he would bring the probe to a close, to no avail.

“We’re in the process of responding to their proposal,” Giuliani said while answering reporters' questions in New Hampshire Wednesday.

In the past, Giuliani has alleged that Mueller is setting up a "perjury trap" for Trump. Experts claim that there's no trap if the president doesn't lie. One former federal prosecutor went so far as to say that it's very difficult for prosecutors to prove a perjury case.

One legal expert said Tuesday, that if Mueller doesn't call Trump to be questioned it could prove that he's moved from being the subject of an investigation to the target. If he's the target of the investigation, being required to answer questions would put him in the position to incriminate himself. It's for that reason that federal prosecutors don't subpoena targets.
