MAGA's "bogeyman" George Soros dropped $10 million to boost California Gov. Gavin Newsom's redistricting campaign and push back against President Donald Trump.
The billionaire megadonor is known for backing progressive allies and is now the single largest donation to date for Proposition 50, Politico reports.
"Soros is a longstanding benefactor for the left and bogeyman for the right," Politico reports. "He has poured millions into California politics in recent years, spending $1 million to help shield Newsom from a 2021 recall attempt and working to elect progressive prosecutors who embraced lighter sentencing and tougher police accountability."
Republicans have long used Soros in conspiratorial theories in an attempt to downplay his impact. His donation will further influence the fundraising efforts and Golden State ballot measure.
“This ballot measure temporarily changes the way lines are drawn in California, giving voters the opportunity to level the national playing field," a spokesman for Soros said in a statement, according to the New York Times.
Last month, Trump lashed out at Soros and his son in a Truth Social post where he suggested the two of them should be investigated for racketeering.
“Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country! That includes his Crazy, West Coast friends. Be careful, we’re watching you!” Trump wrote.
The president's meltdown came after reports that Soros — a long-time right-wing nemesis — has donated to groups protesting the military occupation of Washington, D.C., along with other cities on tap.
Other Prop. 50 donors include labor unions, a national Democratic PAC and wealthy liberals have now contributed more than $30 million to convince California voters to approve new House maps. The move could wipe out a half-dozen Republican seats and secure Democratic incumbents.
Newsom's strategy is a response to Trump's election gerrymander in Texas, Missouri and now New Hampshire — with Newsom adding his own touch to persuade voters, CalMatters reports.
The California Legislature approved Newsom's proposal requesting a special election on a ballot measure that would suspend the state's current congressional districts and replace them with a map expected to favor Democrats.
