Donald Trump announced Friday that he's headed to Texas to campaign for his former opponent Ted Cruz's reelection -- and a group of MSNBC panelists couldn't contain their laughter about it.
"It's been a long time since Texas has been electing Democrats," host Steve Kornacki joked, adding that Trump won the state by 9 points in 2018 and that Mitt Romney won it by even more.
"Does that send a signal?" Kornacki asked the assembled Hardball panelists, referencing Cruz's surprisingly tough race against Democrat Beto O'Rourke.
Newsday's Emily Ngo responded that although Trump's increasingly "deep" base "may make for a poppin' campaign rally," it's not likely to win the election for the "desperate" Cruz.
"Ted Cruz and President Trump are not friends," Ngo said. "I wouldn't even say that they're 'frenemies.'"
The host went on to note that Trump paid lip service to the conspiracy theory that Cruz's father was involved in the assassination of JFK and panelist Jonathan Alter added that the president once insulted the looks of the senator's wife.
"How lame do you have to be?" Alter asked.
