A Democratic member of Florida's House of Representatives pulled off a stunning upset on Tuesday night in the state's Senate special election.

Angie Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Alex Vindman, a retired Army Lieutenant colonel who reported President Donald Trump's 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that triggered his second impeachment. CNN and NBC News called the race.

Nixon ran her campaign on what she described as a "people-powered" platform that includes reducing the cost of living for families.

Vindman has not held elected office before, and sold himself to voters as someone who would stand up to President Donald Trump, according to reports.
