A Republican congressional candidate in Texas who has repeatedly drawn controversy over his inflammatory remarks once described fantasizing about running over cyclists with his car — and suggested he could get away with it.
Brandon Herrera, a gun-rights activist and YouTube personality running in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, made the disturbing remarks during a 2022 episode of the "Rekieta Law" podcast, according to a report Monday in MeidasTouch.
Asked what triggered “unreasonable bouts of anger,” Herrera immediately singled out cyclists.
“I f-----g hate cyclists,” Herrera declared as he launched into a profanity-laced tirade about groups of bicyclists.
“I just, like, I had f-----g fantasies of running them all over,” Herrera said. “And, you know, maybe one of these days I will. I don’t know.”
The conversation took an even darker turn when the host, Nick Law, suggested motorists should be “legally allowed to run over” cyclists who fall behind their groups.
“Oh, buddy, I have thought about ways that I could get away with it,” Herrera responded. “I feel like I could have done it without going to jail, but I don't."
Herrera also made a disparaging reference to a cyclist being someone’s “mentally impaired uncle.”
“You’d be doing them a favor,” Law said in the disturbing exchange.
The resurfaced interview adds to a string of controversies surrounding Herrera, who has won over the endorsements of President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
MeidasTouch previously reported on videos in which Herrera mocked people with Down syndrome and other disabilities and insulted a woman while filming herself driving.
Herrera is running against Democrat Katy Padilla Stout in the November election in the sprawling Texas border district vacated by the resignation of disgraced former Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX).
