As Trump defense attorney Bruce Castor Jr. gave his opening remarks at the outset of Donald Trump's second impeachment trial this Tuesday, many observers found themselves baffled at the seemingly aimless tone of his speech.

"It's funny, you ever notice how when you're talking or you hear others talking about you, uh, when you're home in your state," he said at one point. "They would say, you know I talked to my senator... it's always my senator. Why is it that we say my senator?"

The lawyer also said Trump's impeachment trial was not about "trading liberty for security." It's about "suggesting that it is a good idea that we give up those liberties that we so long fought for."
