The tyranny of Donald J. Trump -- the president who thinks he and his family are above the law

Donald J. Trump and his team have now openly declared that he is above the law rather than, as our Constitution provides, a public servant whose duty is to faithfully execute the law.

Trump once scowled at me when I went out of the blue to Mar-a-Lago. It showed how vulnerable the property is.

We were sitting on the patio at Mar-a-Lago, enjoying drinks and dinner with a few friends, when Donald Trump suddenly showed up.

White supremacy is literally killing people -- white people

In 1935, W.E.B. Du Bois, one of America's greatest thinkers and historians, wrote about the distinctive situation of poor white people in his landmark book "Black Reconstruction in America":

Now we know that 'spy' hunter Bill Barr is a Trump true believer

If there was anyone left who wondered if Attorney General William Barr was an institutionalist or a Trump loyalist, this week has cleared that up. He is Trump's man at the Department of Justice, ready and willing to advance the White House line regardless of how it might affect his own credibility. After Barr's two days of testimony, first before the House Appropriations Committee and then the Senate Judiciary Committee, it's unclear if he is even aware that such a thing might be important. The much maligned Matt Whitaker, Trump's former acting attorney general, may end up being remembered as more of an honest broker than Barr is turning out to be.

The backlash against Pete Buttigieg has exposed some sad facts about evangelical Christianity

Republicans aren’t the only ones who have been discussing religion on the campaign trail. Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana and a 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful who has been climbing in recent polls, has had much to say recently about the role that religion can play in Democratic Party politics — and the nasty backlash that he is receiving from the Christian right shows just how narrow, tribalist and exclusionary their view of Christianity is.

Here's the weird psychological reason Democratic primaries may serve Trump's interests

More than ever in the age of social media, when political opponents compete they focus on each other’s character flaws, missteps, and past bad behavior rather than differentiated policy proposals. Some call it the politics of denunciation, and at this point in the evolution of culture, denunciation often focuses on transgressions against identity: perceived racism, sexism, homophobia, islamophobia, or insensitivity to immigrants.

Mitch McConnell is leaving a mark on America that could last for decades

In either January 2021 or January 2025—depending on whether he serves one or two terms—Donald Trump’s presidency will become a memory. But his mark on the federal judiciary could last for generations. The Republican who is doing the most to help Trump achieve that is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and in an April 10 report for the Daily Beast, journalist Eleanor Clift explains why the Kentucky senator has been so helpful to Trump when it comes to moving the federal judiciary to the far right.

Why the GOP used a black woman and a Jewish man to gaslight congress on the threat of white nationalism

It is often easy to get caught up in the outrage cycle generated by the behavior of President Trump and the people in his administration. The daily barrage of lies, followed by gaslighting from his supporters is only upstaged by his flouting of decorum, undermining of institutions and the cruelty of his policies.

Here's why removing Donald Trump from office is more urgent than ever

One of the most challenging tasks Americans can undertake at the moment is to impeach the president for his myriad high crimes and misdemeanors. It’s challenging but we have no choice. It has to be done for a variety of reasons including and especially this: it’s almost impossible to simply name, much less adjudicate, every impeachment-worthy trespass by Donald Trump simply because there are so many.

Bill Barr's semi-brilliant cover-up strategy: Drone us all to death with total boredom

Attorney General Bill Barr was hired to manage the cover-up of Donald Trump and his campaign's ties to Russian efforts to undermine American democracy. After his appearance before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, there can no doubt left that Barr is very good at his job. He stonewalled, he dodged and he dissembled with an acuity developed from decades of practice concealing Republican malfeasance.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unmasked the ugly classism lurking inside the Republican Party

Of all the new members of Congress who were victorious in the 2018 midterms and seated in January, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the one who far-right Republicans appear to hate the most. The right-wing media, from Fox News to AM talk radio to Breitbart News, is obsessed with the 29-year-old congresswoman — and not in a good way. Anyone who consumes right-wing media is inundated with anti-AOC conversations and articles, many of which try to attack her credibility by mentioning the fact that she was once a bartender. And the more Republicans use the word “bartender” as an insult in connection with Ocasio-Cortez, the more they show the ugly classism that characterizes their party in 2019.

Trump's desperate efforts to obscure Mueller's findings have recently taken on a new meaning -- here's why

Donald Trump’s desperate efforts to both hide Special Prosecutor Robert S. Mueller’s findings, as well as his tax returns, take on new meaning in light of documents a federal judge unsealed at my request.
