Christian right replacing 'biblical commands' with 'secular prophets' like Tucker Carlson: columnist

Far-right Christians are turning their backs on Biblical teachings, instead embracing near-totally areligious figures like Tucker Carlson in their war for political supremacy, New York Times opinion writer David French Monday.

"On April 25, the far-right network Newsmax hosted a fascinating and revealing conversation about Tucker Carlson with Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, one of America’s leading Christian conservative advocacy organizations," wrote French.

A neuroscientist explains why Tucker Carlson could become a bigger threat than Donald Trump

To the bewilderment of many conservatives, Fox News fired Tucker Carlson from the network last month without any warning, despite hosting its most successful show.

Some have speculated that he was canned for racism and misogyny, but let’s be real — those are the kinds of things that you get promotions for at Fox News. It certainly provides a great excuse for Fox, though. While no one will likely ever know the true reason for the decision — though here are some possible explanations — the big question now is: what is next for Tucker Carlson?

DC insider: A new progressive era in America is likely in about 20 years — unless Republicans destroy democracy in the meantime

A new progressive era is dawning in America, and almost nothing Republicans can do will hold back the tide — unless Republicans destroy democracy altogether (more on this in a moment).

Start with the recent victories. In Chicago, progressive Brandon Johnson, a once little-known county commissioner and union organizer, won the mayor’s race over his more conservative Democratic opponent, Paul Vallas, who ran on a tough-on-crime platform and was endorsed by a police union.

In Wisconsin, Janet Protasiewicz, a liberal Milwaukee County judge, won a high-stakes race for a seat on the state’s Supreme Court.

No clarity from Clarence: More entanglements between Crow and Thomas raise questions

Investigative outlet ProPublica is like a dog with a bone, revealing now that real estate baron Harlan Crow paid for years of pricey private school tuition for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ great-nephew Mark Martin, whom the jurist had taken legal custody of and had been raising as a son. Thomas’ defenders should have kept their powder dry after the first revelations, as their first excuses look increasingly asinine beside the drip-drip of financial entanglements. The “Crow’s just giving hospitality to an old friend” rebukes have given way to the even more absurd “Crow is simply helpi...

Here is why ChatGPT can never replace writers, educators or humans in general

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have given rise to hyperbolic predictions of the decline of many human roles and professions. In fact, purported AI platforms such as ChatGPT will never be meaningful replacements for writers, educators or people in general. To understand why this is true, it is critical to remind ourselves of what ChatGPT is and how its architecture and capabilities relate to the science of human learning and the arts of writing and teaching, respectively. Despite popular suggestions to the contrary, ChatGPT simply cannot think or reason in any meaningful way. ChatGP...

The sound of silencing: Montana lawmaker latest in trend of political retaliation

Montana State Rep. Zooey Zephyr can vote but no longer participate in debates or even walk the chamber floor after a party-line vote to bar the Democrat from entering as a punishment for speaking up against anti-trans bills under consideration. This comes shortly after now-reinstated Tennessee State Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled for protesting against gun violence and Arizona Republican Liz Harris was expelled from her chamber. Working to silence political opposition — legitimate political disagreement, which we emphasize is distinct from things like hate speech and threa...

The end of this bride’s life was ugly. But the rest of it was filled with so much beauty.

The months, weeks and days leading up to Samantha Miller’s wedding last Friday were probably pretty similar, generally speaking, to a lot of run-ups to a lot of weddings: In other words, they were fraught with fears and frustrations. During her first dress-shopping trip with her mom, Sam tried on 40 dresses — and didn’t like any of them. Two weeks before her wedding, she learned that the photographer who was booked to shoot the ceremony and reception had quit. Then early last week, the forecast was showing a 90% chance of rain for Folly Beach, the South Carolina city that was to host her hitch...

Democracy dies when students don't know the basics of history and civics

The National Assessment of Educational Progress civics test scores for eighth graders for the first time have registered a decline while history scores continued their steep decline. The results for the nation’s report card are abysmal and present a major warning sign for the future regarding the ability of young people to grasp the events that shaped America and how the nation’s democratic institutions function. The lower that understanding, the higher the chances of young people being manipulated by social media and falling victim to political liars and scammers. Girls performed worse than b...

How the government allowed the Proud Boys’ violence to fester for years

The May 4 conviction of former Proud Boys national chairman Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and three other leaders on charges of seditious conspiracy and dozens of others was made possible by the Proud Boys themselves.

Before, during, and after the Jan. 6 insurrection that briefly stopped the congressional certification of Joe Biden as president, the Proud Boys took credit for storming of the U.S. Capitol that resulted in five deaths.

How to stop Republicans from tanking the economy

Republicans are threatening to destroy the economy if President Biden doesn’t give into their demands. But the Fourteenth Amendment gives him the power to stop them.

Republicans are taking advantage of the “debt ceiling” to try to force deep, painful cuts to programs Americans rely on. If Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, America might have to default on its bills, destroying the credit of the United States and wiping out millions of jobs.

Clarence Thomas is indefensible except to these right-wingers

It’s being called “the biggest legitimacy crisis in the modern history of the Supreme Court.” Thursday’s bombshell report from ProPublica, its third investigation into U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his billionaire benefactor, reveals GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow paid the private school tuition – up to $150,000 – for Thomas’ legal ward, his grandnephew who lived with the Thomas’ from the age of six.

Legal and political experts, including two Democratic U.S. Senators, have weighed in. Some are calling it corruption.

On CNN's attempt to rehabilitate Trump in a sanitized 'Town Hall' with a mostly MAGA audience

Next week, CNN will take a shot at normalizing American fascist movement leader and GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, a man who openly embraces murderous Nazis, Vladimir Putin, white supremacy, misogyny, religious bigotry, and political violence.

They will feature and fete a career criminal who over 20 women have claimed raped or sexually assaulted them.

A wannabee dictator who tried to overthrow the government of the United States and replace it with himself as a strongman ruler-for-life…and now wants America to let him finish that job.
