A disgraced Donald Trump will leave office as one of the biggest losers in history

Donald Trump will end his disastrous presidency violating the central, overarching promise he made to the public in 2016: That he and his supporters would win so much that they'd be "sick and tired of winning." Trump vowed that he alone would bring back lost manufacturing jobs, restore white, Christian America's dominance over an increasingly diverse country and punish those politically correct elites who looked down their noses at his voters.

Now, four years later, the walls are coming down around him. Two years after Trump led his party to one of the most bruising midterm defeats ever, he lost his own bid for re-election and then lost dozens of court cases attempting to overturn the results. And he was widely credited with handing Democrats control of the Senate by depressing Republican turnout in Georgia.

Trump is trying to manipulate his way out of consequences — it can't be allowed to work

Thursday night, a clearly reluctant Donald Trump released a video, promising, "My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power."

Of course, his focus just the day before was on stoking a violent insurrection, making any hope of an "orderly" — much less a "seamless" — transition of power impossible. It was a little like throwing someone's pet off a balcony, and then promising that, from here on out, you're going to be the most responsible of dog sitters.

‘You don’t have to do this’: Lindsey Graham dunked in scorn for trying to save Trump from another impeachment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) tried to defend President Donald Trump from becoming the first president to get impeached twice, and he was widely mocked and criticized.

The South Carolina Republican refused to sign on Wednesday night to the president's efforts to undo his election loss, after pro-Trump rioters broke into the U.S. Capitol in a riot incited by the president, but two days later Graham complained that impeachment would be too divisive.

'Just resign': Trump slammed for 'childish' tweet that he's refusing to attend Biden's inauguration

After his Twitter time-out for inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday that led to five deaths, and a video he posted on Thursday after he regained his tweeting privileges claiming he wanted to help the nation "heal," Donald Trump tweeted on Friday morning he will be a no-show for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration.

In a terse announcement, the president wrote, "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th."

Twitter users were quick to pile on the one-term president for acting like, like a "crybaby" with one critic writing, "Wow, a sore loser and seditious traitor to our nation skips the Inauguration. Who could have foreseen this?"

That was the general consensus as you can see below:

Don't be fooled — most Republicans still side with insurrectionists

Calling for "peace" was the word of the day on Capitol Hill Wednesday, after an insurrectionist mob overran the U.S. Capitol, in what was ultimately a failed attempt to prevent Congress from affirming Joe Biden's victory in November's presidential election. Some politicians — mostly Democrats, but a few clearly rattled Republicans — meant these words of peace. But some, most obviously Donald Trump himself, did not.

'Bunker' Trump mocked as a 'coward' for fleeing to Camp David amid talk of 25th Amendment

Less than 24 hours after armed insurrectionists seized the U.S. Capitol at the president's urging, Donald Trump fled the city to Camp David.

The weekend vacation comes amid reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Vice President Mike Pence to request a move to invoke the 25th Amendment, which removes the president from office if there is a belief he cannot continue his role.

'Sniveling suck-up' Marco Rubio faces furious backlash for 'spineless' tweet about pro-Trump Capitol violence

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was ripped apart for gently condemning his fellow lawmakers who helped provoke a violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol by lying about overturning President Donald Trump's election loss.

The Florida Republican declined to identify Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) or Ted Cruz (R-TX) for announcing they would object to Joe Biden's electors in some states Trump contested, although he blames the violence on those who promulgated the myth that Vice President Mike Pence could undo the election results.

'They're not very good at revolution': Rick Wilson says Trump mob's incompetence accidentally saved democracy

Rick Wilson tore apart President Donald Trump for encouraging an angry mob to take over the U.S. Capitol -- and bashed Capitol police for letting the "redneck Visigoths" into the building.

The Lincoln Project co-founder and former Republican strategist has been studying Trump and his cult for years, but Wilson admitted in a new Daily Beast column that the violent mob ransacking the halls of Congress shocked even a jaded observer such as himself.

Conservatives howl in rage as GOP's Massie fact-checks Trump election claims

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) fact-checked President Donald Trump's claims about congressional certification of Joe Biden's election win on Wednesday -- and conservatives were furious.

The Kentucky Republican explained that no state legislature had asked Congress to reject their electors, despite the president's claims, as Vice President Mike Pence prepares to preside over the largely ceremonial process that some GOP lawmakers have promised to challenge.

This could have been prevented: How mainstream media silenced mental health experts who sounded the alarm on Trump

There is an unambiguous reason why mental health experts have not been seen or heard or read in the national media during the past four years. The mainstream media has intentionally blocked these experts from speaking out about Donald Trump's mental pathology and its dangerous impact on the public's safety and welfare. The professionals who understand Trump the best have been gagged and muzzled. The media has been a major enabler of Trump — and that continues to this day.

Mental health experts could have helped to prevent Trump's election in 2016, minimized his destructiveness from 2016 to 2020, and/or thwarted his re-election chances in 2020. Their collective voices could have been loud, compelling and impactful. History will show that the mainstream media has been as complicit with Donald Trump as any other group of enablers, including congressional Republicans, cabinet members, close associates and his millions of supporters.

Georgia runoffs power a Democratic comeback: Last election of Trump era may lock GOP out of power

As I write this, the results of the two Senate runoff races have not yet been officially certified, but most of the smart election analysts project both Democrats have won. The Cook Reports' Dave Wasserman issued his famous "I've seen enough" early Tuesday evening for Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock, who successfully challenged unelected incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, and a couple of hours later tweeted the same for Democrat Jon Ossoff, who has apparently defeated Republican multimillionaire David Perdue to become the first millennial in the Senate.

Anything's possible in close races so I am withholding my euphoria — but if this holds, it's hard to overstate just how important this result is going to be. No matter what ultimately happens in the race between Ossoff and Perdue, as multiple outlets have called Warnock the victor over Loeffler, Democrats have at least managed to wrestle control of the Senate away from Republicans. If the Senate is ultimately tied 50-50, Kamala Harris is able to cast the deciding vote as vice president.

'Unstable and dangerous': Trump's unhinged call provides more evidence of his mental deterioration

Donald Trump's behavior is imminently dangerous to the health and safety of all Americans and to democracy. Despite losing the 2020 election, he has been fighting relentlessly to stay in power.

He has called for a protest in DC on Wednesday (Jan. 6), promising it will be "wild", to which the misogynist and violent "Proud Boys" responded. His conspiracy-mongering has enlisted 140 Republican representatives to plot to overturn the election by getting Congress to contest the validity of votes that are unfavorable to him, while Sen.Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has recruited at least 11 other senators to delay election ratification by 10 days, opening room for further disruption and upheaval.

Donald Trump's silver lining: Will his last-ditch coup rip the Republican Party apart?

Despite the existential threat to American democracy Donald Trump is manifesting, there's part of me that's cheering for him to keep on doing what he's doing. I'll explain momentarily. Meantime, yes, he's committing treason by exploiting the office of the presidency to forcibly overturn the certified results of the 2020 election. If he were successful, it would signify the end of our system of government. Sure, he's much more likely to fail, but it doesn't necessarily mitigate the damage he's wreaking, especially to his own party.

Since the November election, Trump has not only been stress-testing our electoral system but also our judicial system and especially various state governments — not unlike the velociraptors in "Jurassic Park" testing the electrified fences as a means of escape. While he's been hilariously unsuccessful, he's essentially leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for the next Trump (who could literally be another Trump) to follow in his tiny footsteps.
