Donald Trump had it coming

The last thing any of us should want is the president becoming some kind of QAnon martyr. Other than that, however, I reserve the right to feel however I want to feel about the president and his wife coming down with a case of Covid-19. My life and your life have been turned upside down—and we’re the lucky ones. Some of us are out of work. Some of us are getting sick or sicker. Some have buried mothers, uncles, cousins and sons. All of us have felt the empurpled rage of being lied to endlessly.

Trump's diagnosis could change everything — but GOP still scheming to suppress vote

Leave it to Donald Trump to test positive for COVID-19 just two days after a disastrous debate performance. It's tempting to think this is yet another of his reality show stunts, but it's hard to believe that he could get away with faking something like this considering that the Trump White House leaks like a sieve. It's more likely he does have the virus and his best-case scenario will be that he's one of the lucky asymptomatic cases and can spend the rest of the campaign testifying to his youthfulness and strength, no doubt attributable to "good genes."

Here's what you need to do if you experience voter intimidation on Election Day

During the presidential debate on Tuesday night, September 29, President Donald Trump alarmed millions of his critics by expressing his solidarity with the Proud Boys — a racist far-right group with a history of violence — and urged his supporters to act as poll watchers on Election Day. Trump's comments made it painfully clear that Republicans will do everything they can to discourage Democrats and supporters of former Vice President Joe Biden from voting. Certainly, voter intimidation and voter suppression are legitimate concerns in 2020, and CNN has published an informative guide for coping with those problems.

GOPer Loeffler buried in ridicule after threatening China for giving Trump COVID-19

Georgia Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler was buried on Twitter Friday morning after accusing China of infecting Donald Trump and his wife Melania with the novel COVID-19 with the all-cap threat: "WE MUST HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE."

Here's why we should hope Trump survives his fight with COVID-19

Donald Trump’s late night tweet that he and his wife have contracted COVID brings to mind the word “hope” in four ways, all of them tests of the character of Americans.

Republicans fail to suppress their contempt for working Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic

It’s still unclear to me what Lindsey Graham was complaining about last night. He and three other GOP senators made a stink over a provision in the $2 trillion stimulus bill regarding jobless insurance. It’s unclear because their complaint was incoherent.

Republicans mutilate their party to glorify a philandering sadist amid the coronavirus crisis

One of my preoccupations here at the Editorial Board is getting people to see the problems we face are much bigger than one terrible president. Donald Trump is a symptom of political and institutional rot as much as he is a catalyst. Yet too many people, especially white liberals, seem to think things will get better once he’s gone.

How can honest people possibly be bored by impeachment hearings?

Some of you know I used to teach a course at Yale on the history of presidential campaign reporting. My students read classics like The Making of the President (the 1960 election), Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail (1972), What It Takes (1988), and McCain’s Promise (2000, based on David Foster Wallace’s long essay “Up, Simba”).

Here are 5 hilariously dubious ways Team Trump is denying Steve Bannon's white nationalist links

The appointment of Steve Bannon to a top post in Trump's White House has, to put it mildly, raised concerns: the former Breitbart news head is credited with transforming Andrew Breitbart's already problematic site into an unapologetically sexist, racist and xenophobic platform, which such informative offerings as, "Hoist It High and Proud: The Confederate Flag Proclaims a Glorious Heritage” and “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy” and “There’s no hiring bias against women in tech, they just suck at interviews.”

Yes, the Reichstag is on fire -- but the American people have water to put it out: Will Bunch

Part of a life well-lived, I’ve come to realize, is hanging on to an old quote from a mentor or family member that over time has taken on much deeper meaning than when it was uttered to you as a clueless 16-year-old. For me, it’s the oxymoron that my high school football coach, Rob Pickert, used to teach how a defensive end must rush a quarterback — “with reckless abandon, but under control.” Over the next 45 years I’d see that’s the right way to tackle a lot of problems … including a vainglorious wannabe dictator poised to end U.S. democracy. My thoughts on President Donald Trump’s open contem...

Trump threatens the very foundation of the American republic

The president, convinced his reelection was doomed as the country teetered on the edge, with Americans violently split amid racial animosity and charges that he had badly mismanaged an unprecedented national calamity that had claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands, wrote the following and had his Cabinet sign it sight unseen, bonding their pledge with their signatures:“This morning, as for some days past, it seems exceedingly probable that this administration will not be re-elected. Then it will be my duty to so co-operate with the president-elect, as to save the Union between the election...

Wiping surfaces is fine for coronavirus, but the main risk is through the air. How to tell if your ventilation is OK

PHILADELPHIA — Once an hour, sometimes more, employees at Weavers Way Co-op grocery stores diligently wipe disinfectant on all “high-touch” surfaces: the checkout counters, the banisters, the plastic nozzles that dispense gourmet granola. At Whole Foods Market, workers sanitize even more often, wiping the credit-card readers between every customer.“Deep cleaning” is the coronavirus catchphrase of the moment as more retailers, schools, and offices increase their indoor operations. And in at least one case, the goal seems to be deep and long-lasting: Witness American Airlines’ plan to use a clea...
