Omicron now dominant Covid-19 strain in US: health authorities

The fast-spreading Omicron variant is now the main coronavirus strain in the United States, accounting for 73.2 percent of new cases over the past week for which data is available, health authorities reported Monday.

The spike, which was tallied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is based on data for the week ending on Saturday. During the prior week period, Omicron accounted for only 12.6 percent of US cases.

US to offer free Covid tests as Omicron becomes dominant

The United States said Tuesday it will distribute hundreds of millions of free Covid tests in the face of surging Omicron cases, which have forced governments worldwide to reimpose restrictions ahead of the holidays.

Washington also said Tuesday it will donate more than $500 million in international Covid aid to help countries battle the pandemic, while Israel announced tough new restriction on US travel.

"On the 21st of October, Jennifer Arcuri hosted a livestream via the encrypted messaging app Telegram to talk about Satanists in the UK government," Vice News reports. "The American entrepreneur, who rose to prominence in the UK over an alleged affair with Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he was mayor of London, announced that she’d had 'a few requests to do some conspiracy discussions.'"

Alcohol abuse dramatically increased following the outbreak of COVID-19 -- according to multiple studies

A new study by the RAND Corporation shows that alcohol consumption rose among adults over age 30 by 14% during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 41% increase in women heavily drinking. The strain also took a toll on those already coping with addictions, spiking relapse and overdose rates.

The results of the study followed the loosening of liquor laws in dozens of states as a coping method for businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic that has, so far, gone on almost three years. Newly relaxed laws that included "cocktails-to-go laws, which allow consumers to pick up mixed cocktails, beer or wine at their local pub or restaurant, and direct-to-consumer laws that allow grocery stores or liquor stores — and sometimes distillers, brewers or winemakers — to deliver alcoholic beverages directly to people’s homes," The Washington Post reported.
