A security guard hired by a Bay Area TV station was shot on Wednesday while on assignment with a reporter who was covering a robbery in Oakland.

The security guard working for KRON4 was in stable condition after being shot in the abdomen and undergoing surgery.

"Police say the incident was an attempted armed robbery to steal camera equipment," the station reports. "The KRON4 crew was covering a story on a recent smash-and-grab robbery on the 300 block of 14th Street when shots were fired at 12:20 p.m."

The reporter who was with the security guard was not injured.

"She managed to still do her job, recording the scene after the incident as it unfolded before her eyes," according to the station.

The incident occurred amid a wave of smash-and-grab robberies targeting retail shops in the Bay Area.
