MAGA world erupted in outrage Wednesday after a New York Times investigation linked former Rep. Mary Peltola’s Democratic Senate campaign to a secret effort to recruit another candidate named Dan Sullivan in Alaska’s closely watched Senate race.
“This is shameful,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) declared on X. “Fake Dan Sullivan should withdraw immediately.”
The Times reported that Peltola’s campaign worked with Democratic operatives to recruit candidates who could siphon votes from Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, including a retired teacher with the same name. The campaign and national Democrats have denied involvement.
But prominent Trump allies and MAGA figures came out swinging Wednesday against Peltola — while praising the Times’ reporting.
“NYTs with the great scoop,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) wrote, adding, “Though legal, it is dirty pool for sure.”
“Mary Peltola was directly involved in the scheme to confuse Alaska voters by getting additional ‘Dan Sullivans’ on the ballot. And Peltola lied about,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) posted on X.
“This is a direct scheme to undermine the integrity of the election,” he added.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) called the revelations “unbelievable.”
“Even the New York Times is reporting this,” Cruz wrote on social media.
Even Donald Trump Jr. joined the pile-on.
“Dems really love election INTEGRITY!!! AK I hope you realize how badly you’re being played,” the president’s eldest son told his X followers.
White House communications director Steven Cheung called the reported operation a “secret corrupt plan,” while Meghan McCain declared: “This is election rigging and it is illegal.”
The controversy also drew fresh attention from the Justice Department, according to The Washington Examiner's Kaelan Deese, who reported Wednesday that the DOJ is investigating the alleged ties between Peltola's campaign and the origins of Dan J. Sullivan's candidacy. Trump's DOJ has already filed a separate lawsuit over the Alaska Senate race.
“The Alaskans for Mary campaign has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign,” an Alaskans for Mary spokesperson said in response to the new reporting, White House correspondent Mary Margaret Olohan reported.
