The View smacks down Ben Sasse for speaking out against Trump but voting with him every time
Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) found himself cornered on "The View", as he tried to squirm out of explaining his vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court while hiding behind the #Metoo movement.
Co-host Joy Behar got right to the point. "You said at the hearing with Kavanaugh that you thought Dr. Ford was a victim, which I've heard from a lot of Republican senators. You even went down and shook her hand and you seemed sympathetic to her plight," she said. "And then you all voted for him anyway. Why?"
Sasse responded with a rambling description of the #Metoo movement that didn't answer the question, and admitted that the U.S. has "a culture of sexual violence". He also noted that Kavanaugh's accuser is human. But Sasse stepped in it when he misrepresented the testimony of Dr. Ford's witnesses.
"There's a lot about her story, including the four people she placed at the event who say the event didn't happen," Sasses claimed.
"Well, they didn't remember it," shot back Behar, correcting his misstatement.
"Some of them said more than that," Sasse said, but Behar cut him off.
"They were probably drunk, the rest of them were drinking also," she said.
Sasse responded with a non sequitur about the nature of political disagreement and continued to praise the #Metoo movement, but Behar wouldn't let him get away with that either.
"She says she remembers him, exactly him 100%," Behar said. You know who it is who's assaulting you. If that's true, we're stuck with this guy for the rest of our life."
That's when Sunny Hostin jumped in, taking issue with Sasse's reputation for independence.
"During the 2016 election, you were a leader of the Never Trump movement," she said. "In fact, you didn't vote for him. You've called the president 'creepy', a 'megalomaniac strong man' and you said that he didn't have any core principles."
Hostin paused and then dropped the hammer. "It's fascinating," she said. "When I look at your voting record, you currently vote 87.2% in line with this president. How do you reconcile that?"
Sasse responded again with a non sequitur, playing up his conservative principles before saying America's real problem was "loneliness."
