Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) did a one-on-one interview with his local Fox affiliate wearing a bright green and glitter St. Patrick's Day hat while trashing Black Lives Matter.
Grothman was shouted down by Rep. Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) after making the same claim on the House floor this week, inventing a new justification for racism.
Grothman started out claiming that tax cuts in the COVID-19 relief bill were "anti-family."
"When we've had such influence of Black Lives Matter, an organization when founded that made clear on their website that they're opposed to the -- what they refer to as the 'Western-prescribed nuclear family.' Nuclear families are, of course, worldwide. But I think it's important to always point out that there are people who are anti-marriage who keep making anti-marriage provisions in federal law."
His issue appears to be with the idea that BLM is inclusive of all families regardless of what they look like. Grothman opposes same-sex marriage, and when the Supreme Court overturned state-laws taking marriage rights away from same-sex couples, he released a statement calling it something that would have been "unthinkable 20 years ago."
"I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision today to overturn same-sex marriage laws around the country," said Grothman at the time. "This would have been unthinkable 20 years ago, and as recently as three years ago, President Obama said he was opposed to same-sex marriage. The American people are more than capable of making these decisions, just like we did in Wisconsin in 2006. Unfortunately, five Supreme Court justices clearly do not believe in the original intent of the 14th amendment as it was ratified in 1868. The contempt these Supreme Court justices have for the intent of our Constitution is shocking. This decision was partially influenced by recent public opinion, but the Constitution, as well as religious beliefs, should not change at the whim of public opinion."
The COVID-19 stimulus gives checks to couples that file jointly and additional funds if they have children. Black Lives Matter has been a collection of protests across the country that isn't institutionalized or even centralized. Those who believe the phrase "Black lives matter" support police not killing people of color. Many families, nuclear or otherwise, have been impacted by the death of their loved ones at the hands of police.
