'Money is being pilfered': Democrats worry Trump and Musk will 'steal' from new budget

Democrats want reassurances from congressional Republican and the White House that Donald Trump's administration will actually spend money allocated as part of any new law preventing a government shutdown.

Congress has less than two weeks to agree on an extension to federal spending laws to keep the government operating, but Democrats are wary of the president and his advisers' arguments that he has the authority to withhold money that lawmakers have approved – especially after Elon Musk and his U.S. DOGE Service have unilaterally cut funding and jobs, reported the Washington Post.

Wall Street Journal raises alarm over Trump's 'dangerous' path after Ukraine meeting

Late Sunday the Wall Street Journal editorial board made a demand that Donald Trump use his State of the Union address to explain to the American people what path he is taking the country on as he appears to ally with Russia.

Two days after Trump and Vice PresidentJ.D. Vance berated and harangued Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky during an Oval Office press availability, the editors of the conservative journal's editorial page painted a grim portrait of the president making the world a more "dangerous" place.

As they wrote, based on the president's actions and rhetoric, "Mr. Trump’s strategy seems to be moving toward that of Tucker Carlson and JD Vance, who view America as in decline and no longer able to lead or defend the West."

Noting that Trump appears to be throwing America's traditional allies overboard as he sides with Moscow, the editors suggested, "Mr. Trump has demanded control over the Panama Canal, which the U.S. ceded by treaty in 1999. And he wants Denmark to sell Greenland to the U.S. These moves taken together hint at a worldview that has long been the goal of American isolationists: Let China dominate the Pacific, Russia dominate Europe, and the U.S. the Americas. The Middle East would presumably remain a region of contention, a least until Mr. Trump does a nuclear deal with Iran."

That, they claimed, "... would amount to an epochal return to the world of great power competition and balance of power that prevailed before World War II. It’s less a brave new world than a reversion to a dangerous old one."

Singling out Vance proclaiming the second nascent Trump administration is “stripping away foreign policy illusions,” the editors wrote, "If Messrs. Trump and Vance really are 'stripping away' illusions, why not have the courage to say what those illusions are? Perhaps it’s because such retreat might not be as popular as vague promises of peace.
