Dozens of congressional Republicans plan to snub Trump’s military parade

President Donald Trump is throwing himself a birthday celebration this weekend – but while the event honors both the Army’s 250th anniversary and Trump's own 79th birthday, most congressional Republicans won’t be there to celebrate.

That’s according to a report in Politico, which surveyed 50 GOP lawmakers and found only six who said they plan to stick around Washington for the Saturday spectacle, which includes warplanes, tanks and a multimillion-dollar military parade on the National Mall.

Trump-backed ex-lawmaker wins nod for another run at NJ governor

A multiple-time Republican candidate for governor of New Jersey got another nomination on Tuesday night, The New York Times reported — with the blessing of President Donald Trump.

"With about 20 percent of the estimated vote reported, Mr. [Jack] Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman competing for governor for the third time, beat his two main opponents, State Senator Jon M. Bramnick and Bill Spadea, a conservative radio host, by a convincing margin, according to The Associated Press," reported Tracey Tully. "Mr. Ciattarelli, 63, will now face the winner of a Democratic primary that remained too close to call early Tuesday evening."

Smithsonian to purge ‘anti-American ideology' as MAGA revamp gets underway

Add the Smithsonian to the list of the country’s cultural institutions undergoing a MAGA-style overhaul as President Donald Trump moves to purge what he called “anti-American ideology” from exhibits across its 21 museums and the National Zoo.

While Trump’s executive order aimed at rooting out “improper, divisive” or biased content came in March, the directive ordering a thorough review of all content at the famed U.S. museums was formalized Monday in a closed-door meeting of the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Tulsi Gabbard used AI to figure out what to declassify in JFK files

President Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard admitted to using artificial intelligence software to determine what she should declassify out of the John F. Kennedy assassination files, The Associated Press reported on Tuesday evening.

At the Amazon Web Services Summit, "Gabbard said AI programs, when used responsibly, can save money and free up intelligence officers to focus on gathering and analyzing information. The sometimes slow pace of intelligence work frustrated her as a member of Congress, Gabbard said, and continues to be a challenge," said the report. "AI can run human resource programs, for instance, or scan sensitive documents ahead of potential declassification, Gabbard said."

Dem congresswoman indicted on 3 charges in heated ICE protest

A Democratic congresswoman has been indicted on multiple charges after federal prosecutors said she forcibly impeded and interfered with federal law enforcement officers during a protest at an immigration detention facility last month.

On May 9, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) and other members of Congress embarked on a congressional oversight visit that coincided with an immigration protest at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. As authorities tried to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, authorities say McIver blocked federal agents, put her arms around the mayor, and physically engaged with officers, slamming her forearm into one officer and grabbing another.

'Boondoggle': WSJ's conservative editors rail against new GOP venture

The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board has a new gripe with the House GOP's economic agenda: a change to how housing development is treated, that they believe will just make the tax code more complicated and housing more legally fraught.

"Developers can claim one of two credits. One offsets 30% of the building costs for low-income units if they are at least 50% financed with tax-exempt 'private activity' bonds issued by municipalities. A $100 million project would be eligible for a $30 million credit over 10 years," wrote the board. "To receive the credit, developers must agree to rent a certain share of units to households under specified income limits and at 'affordable rates' for 30 years. But the rules are convoluted, which is why studies have found that projects utilizing the credit take longer to build and cost about 20% more than market-rate housing."

'Watch out': GOP senator warns they may lose Congress over this line in megabill

In a stark warning to fellow Republicans, Sen. Jim Justice (R-WV) cautioned that their plan to require states to share the burden of funding the U.S.'s largest food assistance program could backfire and cost the GOP control of Congress.

Speaking candidly in an interview Tuesday, as reported by Politico, Justice warned of the potential political fallout: “If we don’t watch out, people are going to get hurt, people are going to be upset. It’s going to be the No.1 thing on the nightly news all over the place. And then, we could very well awaken to a situation in this country where the majority quickly becomes the minority.”

Trump mixes up World Wars, days, and civil rights in new remarks

President Donald Trump made a series of inaccurate claims in his remarks on Tuesday, conflating World War I and World War II, incorrectly suggesting he spoke with the governor of California on Monday when it was just after midnight Saturday morning, and asserting—contrary to the First Amendment—that protests, even peaceful ones, can be shut down with “heavy force.”

During remarks to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump was asked when he last spoke with California Governor Gavin Newsom. “A day ago,” he said Tuesday afternoon, which was three and a half days after the governor confirmed his phone call. Trump also confirmed the call by sending a screenshot to a Fox News reporter. The screenshot read June 7, 1:23 AM.
