Florida troopers struggle with overtime, recruitment amid added immigration duties

As Florida gears up its deputization of state troopers to take part in immigration enforcement, the Highway Patrol can’t hire enough troopers to meet its workforce target, Dave Kerner, director of the Department of Highway and Motor Safety, told a House committee Tuesday.

Republican lawmakers questioned Kerner about the $10.3 million the agency spends on overtime pay for troopers and its efforts to fill the 729 agency-wide vacancies, 138 of which are for sworn troopers. The agency was the first to enroll in an agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorizing state troopers to question and detain people living in the country without authorization.

'Unlawful destruction': USAID workers reportedly ordered to shred classified documents

Staffers at what's left of the U.S. Agency for International Development were told to shred and burn documents at agency headquarters in probable violation of the law, according to a report.

Devex reported the email written by Erica Y. Carr, the acting executive secretary of USAID, was sent to a group of staffers who were deemed “essential” and not placed on administrative leave. It instructed them to destroy classified and personnel documents.

'Heartless': Trump’s $660M school food cut is latest GOP attack on nutrition aid

The Trump administration is cutting over $600 million from a program designed to help schools and child care facilities buy healthy food from local farmers, the GOP’s latest attack on poor families. The administration is also cutting a similar program that helps local food banks and other organizations feed people. In total, Politico reported, the cuts come to over $1 billion.

“Roughly $660 million that schools and child care facilities were counting on to purchase food from nearby farms through the Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program in 2025 has been canceled, according to the School Nutrition Association,” Politico reported. “State officials were notified Friday of USDA’s decision to end the LFS program for this year.”
